While in Antigua

Drivers License:

Driving in Antigua and Barbuda requires you to purchase a local temporary drivers license that carries duration of 90 days (3 months). This goes for all wishing to rent a vehicle even if you are the holder of an international driver’s license. This temporary can be obtained from a Naj Car Rental, specific police stations or the Transport Board at a fee of US$20 or EC$50. One must present their current valid drivers license to obtain before a license can be issued.

Driving Tips:

The speed limit is 40 mph on highways and 20 mph in areas that are built up or residential. WE DRIVE ON THE LEFT ONLY IN ANTIGUA AND BARBUDA. Some roads are not lit for driving at night so we recommend cautious and careful driving. Pot holes, unmarked roads, speed bumps and stray animals are very common is some areas. However a great island wide effort is on the way to correct the lighting on the roads and major road works is on the way. Road signs are now in place to assist with driving directions. When approaching a roundabout you must give way at all times to the traffic coming from the right.

Gas Stations:

The island has quite a few service stations around the island where refilling can be done. These stations are clearly marked on the maps provided. Few of the service stations are full service where tire repair, snacks, drinks along with gasoline/diesel can be had. Gasoline/diesel is pumped by a service attendant with instructions from you as to how much gasoline/diesel you require. Please be absolutely certain the vehicle you are driving takes either gasoline or diesel. Filling vehicle with incorrect fluid can be very costly to you..
